Weekend Music Game: Family, Friends, and those other people

And now for something completely different....the Weekend Music Game....this time our idea comes courtesy of my friend Jeff McCloud

Put your MP3 player or other music device/software on shuffle/random and play the first ten songs, without skipping any of them. Then relate each song, in order, to the following list:

Song #1: Your Mom
Song #2: Your Dad
Song #3: A sibling
Song #4: Your spouse (or potential future spouse)
Song #5: Your boss
Song #6: Your pet
Song #7: Next door neighbor
Song #8: Teacher you hated most growing up
Song #9: Best friend
Song #1o: Children (or future/potential children)

They won't all fit, but occasionally you'll get something that is dead on...or even funny...or both!

Alright then, here goes my list:

1. My Mom - "So Much Trouble" by Matt Pond PA - haha. Hope she doesn't read this...but the lines "You're in so much trouble, can't hide in your covers" is something I'm sure she told me as a kid.

2. My Dad - "Above a Whisper" by Andy Zipf - well, he did have a booming voice.

3. Sibling - "Rainmaker" by John Austin - hmmm. not sure what that means...

4. My Wife - "Listen" by Dignan. Oh, you better believe I listen to her!

5. My Boss - "Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash. Ha, pretty funny, but...no. I've never worked for anyone like the guy in the song.

6. My Pet - "Hammer and Nails" by Mark Heard. Oh, I'd like to take a hammer and nails to him some times...

7. Neighbor - "Epignosis" by Chatterbox. Had to look this one up. Apparently it's the Greek word for "full knowledge or discernment." Still doesn't really apply...

8. Least favorite teacher - "Sweeter Than Me" by Aaron Sprinkle. I don't think so...

9. Best Friend - "The Joke is Over" by Damien Jurado. Well, I guess best friends share a lot of jokes. The line "Laughing with you, not at you" should apply, but I think my friends do their fair share of laughing AT me.

10. My Children - "Snowbirds and Townies" by Further Seems Forever. Ha. I have no clue what that means in terms of my kids...but ok.

Well, a few of those were OK I guess. Now it's your turn...

1. My Mom - "In My Life" by the Beatles. Kind of funny because my MOM hates the Beatles (and a lot of other good music). For years, I was convinced I was adopted because of this.

2. My Dad - "Half A World Away" by R.E.M. Kind of appropriate I guess. Dad used to tell stories about Vietnam and feeling an entire world away

3. Sibling - "Brighter than Sunshine" by Aqualung. I bet my sister would relate this song to her brand new baby daughter!

4. Future spouse - "Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major" by Yo Yo Ma. Hopefully this means I'll marry someone who will take me to the orchestra

5. My boss - "Anyone Can Play Guitar" by Radiohead. My boss is a very nice lady, but I doubt she can play guitar

6. My pet - "A Long December" by the Counting Crows. I don't know that my fish, Thoreau, is a big Counting Crows fan...

7. Neighbor - "32 Flavors" by Ani DiFranco. I guess this does cover the fact that my neighbor is "unique"

8. Least Favorite teacher - "Undone: the sweater song" by Weezer. I think I bought this album while I took his class. Jerk. It's amazing I still like history.

9. Best Friend T.S.O.P. (the Sound of Philadelphia) by MFSB. This works well, as many of my very best friends live in Philadelphia.

10. My future children - "Talking Fish Blues" by Woody Guthrie. I don't know how this relates, except that I will definitely introduce my kids to good music, including Woody

Fun game this week Ken - thanks!

1. Mom: "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel. "Grab your things; I've come to take you home" - my mom would do that in a heartbeat if I'd let her.

2. Dad: "How Can I Not Love You?" by Joy Enriquez. This is the love ballad from Anna and the King about forbidden romance. Umm.. my parents are from Thailand :P

3. Sibling: "Piano Man" by Billy Joel. Bro is definitely not a pianist... I got the musical genes, he got the smart genes.

4. Spouse: "Lose Your Way" by Sophie B. Hawkins. This just made me cry. It's a little too fitting for current life situations.

5. Boss: "I Alone" by Live. I don't work... so I have no boss.

6. Pet: "Everlasting Love" by U2. Umm... they love me unconditionally because they don't know any better :P

7. Neighbor: "Where the Streets Have No Name" by U2. I really don't know my neighbors, except for that their kids cut across my yard all the time.

8. Most hated teacher: "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals. She absolutely did drive me crazy, but no in the way the song says :P

9. Best Friend: "Take Me As I Am" by Tonic. The words are something that would come straight from her heart - "Take me as I am / I'm not broken / Pieces of my life are not tokens / I want to let you know that I'm still learning / How to love again and stop hurting"

10. Children: "The Love of God" by Lincoln Brewster. Huh. Imagine that.

1. My Mom
Flight of the Conchords - "Leggy Blonde"
hahahahaha my mom is a blonde. I guess she is leggy. hahaha what a great song to come up.

2. My Dad
Damien Jurado - "Halo Friendly"
I was just talking to someone last night how I feel like my dad is a blessed man. I suppose that would kinda make him Halo Friendly.

3. Sibling
Keane - "Somewhere Only We Know"
Hmmmm. In a sort of convoluted way, I guess this applies to my brother, who is serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. As far as our immediate family, Iraq is a place that only Josh and his fellow platoon-mates know. Although, I don't think he considers that "somewhere" the place of peace and civility to talk and iron out differences, like the singer of Keane is trying to illustrate.

4. Future Spouse
Sunny Day Real Estate - "Grendel"
Since I have no "future" spouse, this number is about as relevant as the explanation of this mostly instrumental song with almost completely unintelligible lyrics.

5. My Boss
U2 - "With a Shout"
Hmmmm. I guess I have heard my boss shout before?

6. My Pet
Rainer Maria - "Atlantic"
Hmmmm... Lebowski (our male cat) is named after a character who lived at the edge of the Pacific Ocean... opposite day?

7. Neighbor
Tears For Fears - "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"
There is certainly one neighbor of ours that thinks his stupid overly-large pickup truck rules the parking spaces on our side of the street. When his house is on the other side.

8. Least Favorite Teacher
Pedro The Lion - "Slow And Steady Wins The Race"
Well, my least favorite teachers were aged women. And the first lyric of this song is "All the way to Grandma's house..."

9. Best Friend
U2 - "Hawkmoon 69"
My best friend does indeed need my love, just as a desert needs rain and a town needs a name.

10. My Future Children
Movies With Heroes - "Ink"
I hope we don't continue to have children "over and over again." The Best Nora is certainly plenty.

You're just trying to keep me from working, aren't you, Ken? Okay...

1. My Mom: "Where the Soul of Man Never Dies" by Hank Williams. My mom dislikes this kind of raw country music, but the title's great for her -- hale and hearty at 90 years old!

2. My Dad: "If You Really Love Me" by Stevie Wonder. No link there. Dad didn't dislike Motown, but he wasn't down wid da funk either.

3. Sibling: "Gypsy Biker" by Bruce Springsteen. I don't have any siblings, but if I had, I've always thought that he or she would have been a gypsy biker. What a remarkable coincidence!

4. Future spouse: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie down" by The Band. I guess if anything happened to my wife I'd have to look for a woman named Dixie. Who was old.

5. My boss: "Unlit Hallway" by Sun Kil Moon. Being self-employed I don't have a boss, but I did catch the last actual boss I had in an unlit hallway, and he was never seen again.

6. My pet: "Take Off Your Old Coat" by Eliza Gilkyson. I have a cat, and she's constantly shedding, so this applies perfectly.

7. Neighbor: "The Thrill Is Gone" by B. B. King. Pretty true, when you've lived next door to each other for as long as we have, Ken.

8. Least favorite teacher: "Voices Inside My Head" by The Police. Mrs. Ammon in 5th grade did talk to herself a lot when she wasn't busy spanking us.

9. Best friend: "Nowhere Man" by the Beatles. Um, no.

10. My Future Children (Is this quiz made for 15-year-olds?): "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan. There's no way I can relate this to my present son. Except that he likes Dylan too, but doesn't own a tambourine.

1. mom: "My Roots Go Deeper" by Alathea. Of course our roots go deeper than our parents.

2. dad: "I'm So Sick" by Flyleaf. When I was younger and even sometimes nowadays I do get so sick of my dad. But I still love him.

3. sibling: "Crawling Back to You" by Backstreet Boys. I don't have any siblings, so I'm not really sure how this fits.

4. spouse: "Long Way Around" by Greg Laswell. I don't know the lyrics, so I'll have to go by title. Sometimes we have to take the long way around to understand each other's motives.

5. boss: "3 AM" by Matchbox Twenty. My boss is up at 3 am worrying about his business.

6. pet: "Unwell" by Matchbox Twenty. Again. I don't even like M20. My cat is NOT unwell, although she has been in the past. Well, we're monitoring a few conditions, so I hope this is not foretelling.

7. next-door neighbor: "Idioteque" by Radiohead. Not sure of the lyrics on this, but my 2 next-door neighbors are not idiots. Although one does have Alzheimer's.

8. hated teacher: "Disease" by Matchbox Twenty. Again. I don't even like MB20. I didn't hate any of my teachers, but I guess if I did, I'd want him or her to have a disease? That's just wrong.

9. best friend: "Navajo" by Jens Gad. Not sure who my best friend is anymore. Once your friends start having kids and you don't, you lose touch. Then they get on FaceBook and you don't. And on. I guess it's my husband now. The song is instrumental (new agey), so I guess it's one that he would like too.

10. children: "Gamelan" from "O"-Cirque du Soleil. First of all, I don't have any kids. Second, the song is in a foreign language, so I definitely don't know what the lyrics are. But I love Cirque!

Please, call me Kris said...

1) Mom "Bird Bath" - Samiam
"an empty nest is just a tangled mess" Since my brothers and I are all moved out, perhaps the reason why she's a "tangled mess"

2) Dad "Songs Of Love" - Ben Folds
My Dad is odd. His song of love would be about his Harley. Or parmigiana.

3) Sibling "Communist Daughter" - Neutral Milk Hotel
This would work out really well if I had a sister, oh well. My one brother has boobs, does that count?

4) Spouse "Shh" - Frou Frou
I can't quite shut up. Always talking, or snoring. She says this frequently

5) Boss "Mr's. Potter's Lullaby" - Counting Crows
Not only could he use a nap, but he has a dog named Mr. Jones

6) Pet "She's In Love Again" - Cherry Twister

Cherry Twister is all things that were right in pop/sugarpop. My dog is all things that are right with insane chihuahua's

7) Next Door Neighbor "Harder They Come" - Jimmy Cliff
I'd like to throw one of my neigbor's off of a cliff.

8) Teacher You Hated "Take My Heart" - Kool & The Gang
Oooh, nice fit. I hated her because I couldn't be with her forever. Silly childhood crushes.

9) Best Friend "Paralyzed" - Cardigans
Also shares my dream of being ravaged by Nina Persson

10) Future Chitlins - "Girls On The Square" - Dent May
I will have girls, I'm sure of it. And they will undoubtedly love the accordion.

1. My Mom - "Nic Fit" by Sonic Youth - she's not a smoker, but she did scream at me a lot.
2. My Dad - "High Plains Drifter" by the Beastie Boys - he's not a cowboy, but he likes westerns.
3. My Sister - "Anne" by Santo Gold not sure how apporopriate this is or isn't
4. My husband - "Balad of the Beaconsfield Miners" by the Foo Fighters I think this song fits him in so many ways. He plays guitar and is quite and intense like the song. Plus he told me the story of how Dave Grohl came to write it.
5. My Boss - "Since I've Been Loving You" by Led Zep This really doesn't apply at all unless you consider the line about how hard he's been working for her
6. My dog, Apollo - "Call Me A Dog" by Temple of the Dog - I SWEAR this is what actually came up!
7. My neighbor - "Take My Anthem" by Live there are a lot of "patriots" in my neighborhood
8. Teacher I hated Most - "She Hates Me" by Puddle of Mudd once again this is actually what came up!
9. Best Friend - "Statues" by Foo Fighters It's about two people who are meant to be together until the end, works for me
10. Children I'm never going to have (don't want them) - "Fall Down" by Toad the Wet Sprocket (going to see them in FEB!) The words to this song describe one of the many reasons I wouldn't want to have kids, dealing with these problems was hard enough for me.

1. Mom: "Don't Forget About Delight," Bruce Cockburn. My mom wouldn't get into the poetry and imagery of Cockburn, but aren't moms supposed to remind you that in the midst of the crappy stuff, "Don't forget about delight"?

2. Dad: "Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us,"Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. Hmmmm. This is a real struggle -- not really coming up with an association with my dad.

3. Sibling: "Ashes of American Flags," Wilco. When my brother was in high school, I imagine him saying, "All my lies are always wishes/ I know I would die if I could come back new/ I want a good life/ With a nose for things/ A fresh wind and bright sky/ To enjoy my suffering."

4. Spouse: "I Will Never Let Go of You," Jackie Green. Seriously, this really came up on the shuffle.

5. Boss: "Real Emotions," Los Lonely Boys. If I told my boss my real emotions, I would probably strangle her. The message of this song is probably the exact opposite of how I feel about my boss.

6. Pet: "Love and Peace or Else," U2. I don't have a pet, but we had a dog when I was growing up. I'd have to say it was a love-hate relationship sometimes: "And I wonder where is the love?/ Where is the love?"

7. Next door neighbor: "Still Can't," The Cranberries. For some reason, our next door neighbor has something against us. It's a shame because our sons are the same age and played together last summer, and then things went south. Appropriate lyrics: "Maybe if you could see beyond,/ Your nose, (your nose, your nose)./ Nothing of what has happened surely shows."

8. Teacher you hated most growing up: "Silver Wheels," Bruce Cockburn. I had to go to thecockburnproject.net to explore the lyrics and look for some comments about the song. Nothing jumps out at me in terms of a teacher. I even discovered Cockburn in the early '90s in college, and this song brings back no inferences to crappy college professors.

9. Best friend: "Brothers," John Mellencamp. Wow! I wouldn't have picked my brother as my best friend -- I would pick my wife, in all honesty. But my brother ranks right up there. There are few people who I can talk to about stuff than my brother.

10. Children: "This is Your Life," The Call. My wife and I look at our two sons -- 8 and 4.5 -- and often tell them something like, "This is your life/ This is your world/ Beginning to end/ This is the price of heaven/ This is the time/ This is your life."
